Intimacy Series (2005) paintings, oil and silkscreen on canvas
The work looks at intimacy and my relationship with my own body in the context of a reserved Islamic society. The work was inspired by the body’s different gestures, its demeanor in different cultural settings. Based on personal experience, the work investigates the relationship of the body with the society and inevitably the issue of the male gaze is one of the points of departures for the work. Ideas of the personal and the public and the ‘boundary lines’ are tied in with the intricate Islamic designs which hold a symbolic meaning in reverencing God in his all-presence and continuity; simultaneously act to erase / veil social actions.

يدرس هذا العمل العلاقات الحميمة والجسد في سياق مجتمع إسلامي متحفّظ. العمل مستوحى من حركات الجسم المختلفة وسلوكه في متنوّع الأوساط الثقافية، اعتمادا على التجربة الشخصيّة يبحث في علاقة الجسد مع المجتمع ويأخذ النظرة الذكوريّة كنقطة بدء حتميّة. ترتبط أفكار متعلّقة بالمساحات الشخصيّة والعامة والحدود ما بينها بالتصاميم الإسلاميّة الدقيقة والتي ترمز إلى توحيد وتخليد الله في طيّاتها من ناحية ومن ناحية أخرى العمل على محو تفاصيل الجسد.
