Ya Reit
Collaborative public intervention (paper, string, tent), 2007

“Ya Reit” is a collaborative project with Amman-based artist Hanan Khalil, and is part of a curated workshop by Rayelle Neimen.
The work investigates the cultural notion of 'fate' as a helpless manifestation customarily linked to life, and is especially linked to occasions of wedding or a death funeral.  Fate is considered in relation to wanting / striving towards change. These notions are investigated through the platform the lottery ticket. The lottery is commonly referred to as Ya Naseeb in Arabic (a colloquial Arabic word translating to Oh Fate).
In itself the lottery is a platform that brings together two contradictions. On the one hand fate – as a pun on the name Ya Naseeb, and as a conscious act from a person in made towards change if the lottery is won. On the other, choice -in the conscious act made through purchasing a lottery ticket. The work was named Ya Reit (a colloquial word translating to I wish).
The intervention involved the public’s participation in writing their wishes on paper slips that symbolized the lottery ticket. For two days a mobile lottery stand was carried to different parts of central Amman. The third day the collected slips were hung in a tent so people could exchange each other’s wishes.

"يا ريت" مشروع تفاعلي مع الفنانة الأردنية حنان خليل، وهو جزء من ورشة عمل مع المنسقة رايل نيمين. يبحث هذا العمل في المفهوم الثقافي للمصير باعتباره مظهرا مرتبطا بحياتنا اليومية، وله علاقة خاصة بمناسبات الزفاف أو الجنازة. ترتبط فكرة المصير بهذا العمل بالرغبة أو السعي نحو التغيير وتتمثّل هنا باليانصيب. يشير عنوان العمل "يا ريت" إلى التمنّي والحلم والنفسيّة المرتبطة بعملية شراء تذكرة اليانصيب.

يجمع اليانصيب بحدّ ذاته تناقضا بين الإيمان بالمصير وفكرة القضاء والقدر، والذي يؤدّي نوعا ما إلى الإتكاليّة والإستسلام، من ناحية، ومن ناحيه أخرى، اقتناء التذكرة هو فعل إيجابيّ وواعي نحو التغيير. أخذ العمل شكل لوح اليانصيب المعروف، وشجع مشاركة الجمهور في كتابة رغباتهم على أوراق بيضاء تمثّل شكل تذاكر اليانصيب. تنقّل العمل لمدة يومين في أجزاء مختلفة من وسط عمان، وفي اليوم الثالث دعى الجمهور لقراءة الأمنيات في خيمة منصوبة تذكر بخيم الفعاليات الاجتاعيّة.
